A Love Hate Relationship

A Composer's Guide To Living a Balanced Life of Family and Composition/Arranging

How much time should we give to our craft of composing/arranging? I guess it depends if you have a full time job that pays the bills. I teach music full time and that pays the bills, but deep down inside stirs a passion of writing and arranging music. Can too much of a good thing be a bad thing? Maybe. It depends on your lifestyle. Married vs Single. Parenting vs having no kids. I've had the best of both worlds. My advice to the above is to make time for everything. Even if composing is paying the bills, make time to take the kids to the movies or out to eat. I remember the guilt of long hour composing binges where I would miss a movie or a party. I also remember being at the movies or at a party and hating the fact that I wasn't at home writing anything. It's truly a love hate relationship. I'm doing much better now from guilt of either choice. I do both. I do it when I want to and enjoy the moment to the best of my abilities. Sometimes I go weeks or months without writing anything. I can also spend hours a day for weeks or months on a project. At the end of the day, it's your time to decide what is valuable for you. Once your precious time has been spent, it's gone! Good bye. Adios.
